The Blackwell Rum ‘Painkiller’, Sea Wolf’s Signature Cocktail

Born from a love of surfing and fishing culture, Sea Wolf is a restaurant with multiple New York locations founded in 2016. They aim to support local fisheries and sustainable farming practices. We wanted to better understand the Sea Wolf experience, especially as so many are drawn to tasting their signature ‘Painkiller’ cocktail, prepared with Blackwell Rum.

We met with Melissa Skiadas, Bar Manager at Sea Wolf Waterfront, who told us that the hope is that guests feel as though they are on vacation, year-round---or at least whenever they come to Sea Wolf.

What better way to transport Sea Wolf guests to a tropical paradise than with some cocktails featuring Blackwell Rum? The Sea Wolf menu has a large list of cocktails, many of which rely on rum to take their diners straight to the Caribbean. Melissa shared with us some of the classics featuring the signature Jamaican rum. However, she also expanded on the one that caught our attention initially, as one of Chris Blackwell’s favorites: ‘the Painkiller’, a frozen machine-mixed cocktail delight and one of the main pulls for establishment, with visitors specifically coming to sample this rum-based drink.

Intrigued? Like us, it is something to be tasted, especially on the waterfront setting by the Brooklyn bridge – if you can’t be in the Caribbean, that is – so we asked Melissa to divulge the details of how to recreate this fantastic cocktail so that you can make the Painkiller at home.

The recipe is quite simple, just lots of – you guessed it, rum. It’s a good treat for a night in or to impress your friends and family at your next summer barbeque! And, with such an impactful name—Painkiller --most people will be reaching for the cocktail before you’ve even got it in the glass.

Melissa describes it as a summery drink since it’s frozen. But, the true allure of this cocktail is the way it takes you to the feeling of being on vacation in that first sip.

Here’s how to prepare the Painkiller at home:

Ingredients:

2 oz Blackwell Rum

1 oz White Rum

1 oz Spicy Rum

1 oz Coconut Concentrate

1 oz Pineapple

½ oz Orange Juice

Cubed Iced

How to make it:

Place all the ingredients into a shaker with plenty of ice. Shake it up well and then serve on the rocks. However, the in-house Painkiller served at Sea Wolf is served frozen. So, if you prefer it that way, you can place all the ingredients in a blender with ice and blend it up!

As you can see, this is a rum-heavy cocktail. By using a variety of rums, your cocktail will have a robust flavor. And, with Blackwell in the mix, you’ll get the island feel in every sip. So, if you can’t physically be on vacation, then head to Sea Wolf! They’ll make sure you feel like you escaped the city with their signature cocktail and fresh seafood.
